Business owners and employees have my empathy for the financial hardships faced. Like anyone else, I am looking forward to the opportunity to socialize in public and a reopening of the economy. As a mental health professional, I understand the deeply-rooted need for people to exercise personal freedom and maintain social relationships. I am deeply concerned that the public is going to engage in behaviors that lead to significant increases in COVID-19, and return of shelter-in-place orders and subsequent hoarding due to fear.
Toilet paper-hoarding is an example of groupthink. Groupthink is a psychological phenomenon that occurs when individuals observe others doing something that is often irrational, and choose to conform in behavior out of fear during stressful situations. My prediction is that gradual abandonment of social distancing and lack of mask wearing will be commonplace because of groupthink, forgetfulness, and lapses in discipline. I have heard people say that the coronavirus is “done” or “over.” Such statements represent only a wish. In reality, the coronavirus is nowhere near finished with impacting us. To believe that a virus is over risks lowering our guard. The decisions of public officials to abandon protective facemasks does not mean that it is a safe decision to make. We do have the power to continually lessen the magnitude of negative impact.
It is shared our duty to continue following social distancing guidelines in order to protect those very people we love the most from potentially deadly consequences. Protect all of us, and yourself by keeping a distance of at least 6 to 10 feet, wearing a mask, and washing your hands before visiting others. Doing so will help to keep us safe until a vaccine can control the virus.
