Opinion: Woe unto those who do not believe there is a God - Sumter Item

For the atheist, there is no supreme being; the Earth just came into existence and God had absolutely nothing to do with it. What if the atheist is right and there is no God? For centuries, rulers of powerful nations have developed their own rules, regulations and laws. These monarchs came into power by dominating the inhabitants of the land. Their goals were to conquer and dominate every person within a region and then move on to the next region. A thought of a higher power was not acknowledged simply because they made their own symbol of a God that they had complete control over.

It seems like everyone wants control; Adolf Hitler wanted to control Germany and the world, so he killed 17 million people including 6 million Jews. Saddam Hussein killed some 2 million people in his quest for control. Pol Pot, the leader of Cambodia, executed 2.5 million people because they did not follow his plan. Mengistu Haile Mariam of Ethiopia did not think twice about eliminating anyone he considered to be in opposition to him. Overall he left about 1.5 million dead during his watch. Josef Stalin, leader of the Soviet Union during the 1920s, launched an economic reform which led to the starvation of approximately 10 million people. Stalin then launched the "great purge," killing everybody who opposed him and his ideas. Mao Zedong, a communist leader of the republic of China during World War II, was thirsty for power. He killed 4-6 million by indiscriminately sentencing them to death. His policies starved about 20 million people.

All of these rulers had a common denominator that flowed through their bodies, domination. Men have always gone beyond the portals of time to satisfy their thirst for power. Oftentimes, this means eliminating anybody who opposes them. A person with this type of DNA is the real threat to society!

In Isaiah chapter 10, God was concerned about the poor, the widows and the fatherless. In fact, a vast amount of the Bible is based on the treatment of these three social groups. The prophet wrote, "Woe unto them that decree unrighteous decrees and that write grievousness which they have prescribed; To turn aside the needy from judgment and to take away the right from the poor of my people, that widows may be their prey, and that they may rob the fatherless! And what will ye do in the day of visitation and in the desolation which shall come from far? to whom will ye flee for help? and where will ye leave your glory? Without me they shall bow down under the prisoners, and they shall fall under the slain. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still" (Isaiah 10:1-4). Isaiah spoke prophetically about the laws man made to corrupt justice. Because of the actions taken by the believers of God who knew better, God used the Assyrians to correct hypocritical Israel and Judah. The Assyrians were interested in expansion resulting in more power. God, however, was interested in punishing a sinful people. Could we be in the same position as Israel and Judah today? Woe unto us if we are.

Whoa and woe are pronounced the same, but they have different meanings. Whoa means to stop, as in a command for a horse. Woe is an exclamation of grief, distress or lamentation. I can remember as a child my grandmother's brother had a mule and wagon. We used to run behind him and jump on the back of the wagon, ride a little while and jump off. He would give a verbal command, whoa, to the mule when we started jumping off the wagon. The mule would then stop until he tapped it with the reins to go again. The two words are spelled differently, defined differently, pronounced the same (woh), and similar in nature. Whoa can stop the mule from impending trouble, and woe unto the mule if it does not stop.

To the atheist or unbeliever, if there is no God at the end, you have lost nothing. If there is a God, woe unto them, who did not believe and receive the Lord as savior. It is always better to have, than to need and don't have.
