Holmdel Township Committee Continues to Host Zoom Meetings for Public Discourse - TAPinto.net

HOLMDEL, NJ: Although many towns have returned to in-person government meetings for some time now, and Town Hall buildings are open to the public in many towns, Holmdel is still conducting government meetings virtually and the Municipal offices are not open to the public since March when the pandemic hit. The Holmdel Township Meetings are open to the public on Zoom. The public is allowed a maximum of 3 minutes for each person to discuss items on the agenda. Though not specifically listed as a topic of discussion, the controversy over the blue line that runs through Crawfords Corner Road led to a heavy and polarizing discourse once again, invoking passionate responses from both sides on the matter.

The issue over the blue line has inspired a Change.org petition in support of removing it which has over 1,500 signatures of support, and a counter petition in support of keeping the blue line with nearly 8,000 signatures of support. Though the line supposedly remains a testament to the fallen Dallas officers back in 2016, many believe that through its removal, the Holmdel Township can demonstrate its clear acknowledgement of the cause of Black Lives Matter, as well as their understanding of the system to which our country continues to endorse. On the contrary, many others believe removing the line dishonors the Holmdel’s police force. The discussion was met with voices from both sides. As one caller stated, it is necessary that we as citizens of Holmdel, find it crucial to “appreciate our policemen and women for their effort in the work,” while another commented how irresponsible it would be as a citizen to “stay silent on issues just because we do not experience them.”

Though the topic of the blue line is quite provocative, and has still not been resolved, the Holmdel Township Committee doesn’t seem keen on removing it. Though some may believe that that is the end of discussion, it can be said that the lack of clarity on this issue will only do more to bolster the voices of those who are against the line, which in turn will lead to more debate.

One thing to be noted was the increased number of young individuals who convened at the meeting to express their opinions respectfully, regardless of their views.
