Re “Which is more unpopular this Halloween?” (Oct. 30): Perhaps Steve Breen is too young to remember when candy corn was one of the most popular Halloween treats or when black licorice was a favorite candy year-round. Even so, his cartoon comparing those candies’ popularity with that of the president was unapt and offensive.
While it is true that President Joe Biden’s approval rating has dropped below 50 percent in the last month or so, the ratings of many others involved in national politics in RealClearPolitics poll summaries are quite a bit lower, in particular those of Kevin McCarthy, Nancy Pelosi, Mitch McConnell and Chuck Schumer.
The statistically unjustified selectivity of putting the president into that comparison, as well as the grossly disrespectful implication of him as a Halloween monster, lead one to think this was a personal, and perhaps partisan, effort to insult the president. We think that even on an opinion page such depictions should be moderated.
