Mike Barnhill

Dear Editor:
Mr. Curtis Thompson in the Jan. 17 edition of your paper said “Mike Barnhill asserts in his Jan, 13 LTE that Trump created a ‘provocation’ when he ordered the killing of Soleimani and calls it an ‘assassination.’ Neither is true.”
I disagree with Mr. Thompson’s assessment of those two words and how they were used to best describe President Trump’s actions. (1) The definition of assassination according to the Webster dictionary: “The act of killing a prominent person for either political, religious or monetary reason.” (2) Killing is an act of causing a death, especially deliberately. (3) Provocation is an action that makes someone mad. Soleimani was a prominent leader in Iran. His death was deliberate. His death made the leaders and populace of Iran mad. Mad enough to send missiles toward American bases resulting in 11 personnel injured and sent to hospitals in Germany.
Is it possible we’re both correct? The death or killing of Soleimani was certainly deliberate. Yet the killing of a prominent person for political reasons may also fit. I say “may” because one never knows what’s really in the mind and intentions of President Trump. I suspect that Presidents Bush and Obama, who passed on the decision to “kill” Soleimani, had their reasons for not doing so. I presume Trump thinks his ideas are superior because he really believes he is “smarter than all the generals” and has said so.
Again, it may be Trump enjoys “grandstanding” and the center of political attention. An example is when he walked across the North and South Korean border line and shook hands with the leader of an enemy who would enjoy obliterating us out of South Korea and possibly this world.
There are two words frequently used in discussing the nation’s economy. I would like to use them in a political sense. Macroeconomics is the part of economics that deals with large scale or general economic factors. Microeconomics is the part of economics concerned with single factors and the effects of individual decision.
Trump’s decision to “kill” Soleimani might be considered a “micropolitical decision.” A single decision yet to be determined in a “macropolitical sense.” Trump’s continued “micro view” of the world’s affairs, both economic and political, will have a profound effect in the future for all of us. Good, bad or indifferent yet to be determined.
