Dear Editor:
Once again, our elected state politicians are planning to fail because they are failing to adequately plan. On Jan. 16, the NT reported that the director of budget and planning said (probably optimistic) forecasts of general revenue collections were expected to increase 1.9 percent. However, the rate of inflation was 1.8 percent in 2019 and is projected above 2 percent for 2020 and 2021.
Elsewhere in the Thursday edition, all kinds of wonderful expenditures are described that state government is going to undertake but no real way to bring in the extra revenue to pay for them. State workers are yet again, "doing more with less" while maybe staying even with inflation (or maybe not) and not making up all the lost ground that leaves them at or near the bottom of all the states in pay, where they've been for decades.
The genius idea they seem to have is the cut the number of state workers, making them somehow increase productivity per capita to make up the difference of the missing workers without any reasonable way to get more blood from that stone. So, more work from fewer people that are already burning out — and are already undercompensated for the work they are doing?
