First, it appears Larson has difficulty distinguishing between the different parameters of an opinion and news article and is conflating the two. Tony Bender's column appeared in The Forum under the heading "Opinion." The definition of opinion is: "a view or judgement formed about something, not necessarily based on fact..." That is a fact.
Second, unless Larson submitted evidence and resources to The Forum with his article, his submission, if published, required publication in the opinion section of The Forum. That is, although he implies his article is fact-based, he offers no specific, verifiable substantiation to corroborate his "facts."
Third, I see articles in The Forum criticizing The Forum for having bias against the "liberal left" (as Larson refers to a particular group) as well as against the conservative right. The corollary to this alleged dual bias: Larson appears to interpret opinions antithetical to his as inflammatory "red meat" (his metaphor) and those which are aligned with his opinions as "factual." That may be his perception but it is a non-sequitur and is not based in reality.
While researching one of Larson's "facts" regarding "the original mission of the NRA...to make sure the African American population was armed for their own protection," I discovered a nuanced version. When the NRA was officially incorporated on Nov. 16, 1871, its primary goal was to "promote and encourage rifle shooting on a scientific basis." Must be an alternative fact!
