It is clear to most Americans that the president of the United States used aid approved by Congress to pressure a foreign country to begin an investigation of a potential political opponent to help him win re-election later this year. More to the point, the president’s legal counsel argued Wednesday that it is perfectly acceptable for a sitting president to use our government to further his own personal re-election goals so long as he believes that his continuing as president is in the best interest of the country. This new theory of unlimited presidential power is not merely preposterous, it is frightening. In exonerating the president, the GOP Senate is poised to adopt and endorse this position, which, frankly, should have us all in the streets in protest — regardless of party affiliation. We are looking into the abyss that is authoritarianism.
So what is the citizenry to do? If we cannot count on our elected officials to do what’s right then it falls on us to speak out and ultimately to replace them. It is a moment in history where we must all act in order to protect our democracy. Specifically, we must ensure Trump does not serve a second term and that the senators that have enabled this utter abdication of checks and balances are voted out of office. It is not acceptable to say, “this is a national issue; it doesn’t concern me or my town.” Our town does not exist in a vacuum and we are U.S. citizens first and foremost. If not us, who?
The reality is we all lead busy lives. We all have commitments that can overwhelm us. All we are asking is that you do what you can when you can — just do something. Join an organization like ours. Donate to causes that are fighting media bias and manipulation. (The Lincoln Project, founded by Republicans, has produced ads that are particularly good.) Help make sure voters in swing states are registered to vote and not the subject of voter purges. Make phone calls, write letters. Go to Pennsylvania, knock on doors and talk to voters about the importance of protecting our country by voting against Trump and Trumpism. At the very minimum, commit to vote this November no matter who becomes the Democratic nominee.
Many of our forefathers died so that we could live in a free democratic republic. Is it too much to ask that we put in the work to make sure that we protect it from those within our country who have no qualms destroying it?
Finally, we will be peacefully assembling in front of Greenwich Town Hall this coming Wednesday, Feb. 5, at 5:30 p.m. Groups across the country will be standing together at that time under the banner “Reject The Coverup” to demonstrate solidarity in the face of rising authoritarianism. You can sign up through this link: https://rejectthecoverup.org. We hope to see you there.
Joanna Swomley and Nerlyn Pierson submitted this on behalf of the Indivisible Greenwich Steering Committee.
