Your Opinion: Budget realities - Jefferson City News Tribune

Tom Ault

Jefferson City

Dear Editor:

Budgets are necessary, and priorities should come first when planning them. When structures are built, maintenance becomes a priority and money must be set aside for that purpose. This sets the need for a budget.

For many of us, the bridge to the island in the Missouri River is a lost cause. Simply put, why put money into something that is going to end up costing many dollars in maintenance, and has very little significant value to anyone except, perhaps, to the memory of the person who donated the money to start the project.

Many of us donate on a regular schedule to something we believe in, that list includes many necessities; but the donation should be of value to someone, rather than some “thing,” and given without the giver’s name for future generations to look at and say, “Who was that?” It is understood that families and sometimes individuals want to be remembered through giving, perhaps the egos should be forgotten and the deeds remembered.

Since this is the capital of our beautiful state, the state population, rather than just the residents of our Jefferson City, should pick up the cost for some of the downtown (Capitol area) beautification projects and shoulder some of the load of maintenance.

Could it be that it is time for the money being spent on the downtown “tourist” areas be used for some other things? How about moving more quickly to assist the folks who lost their homes almost a year ago, or for the touted food problem of feeding kids in the summer? There are so many situations that need monetary help, and that help would be far more beneficial than another park for tourists, and another bridge to be maintained. If we want Jefferson City to be a fantastic place to live, we must take care of our residents. We need a budget set aside, and not robbed later, to answer those needs. This type of budget would be far superior than giving money to a monument so a person or an association might be remembered and egos pleased.

We need to lead by teaching responsibility, humility, and caring, not by ego feeding for the few while ignoring the many. Let’s revisit our budget categories and put money where it can be used more wisely!
