Dear Editor:
The late Sen. John McCain reminded us that individuals are entitled to their own opinions, but not to their own facts, an axiom which we all should heed. A recent LTE from Ms. Schnieders shows she loves her country and is passionate about exercising her right of free speech, but her information is not accurate.
First, the House of Representatives decides on how it will proceed in an impeachment. It sets its rules and those rules are voted on by the members, majority ruling. This is constitutional! Court support for witnesses and documents would have been reaffirming but not necessary as documents are verified and witnesses take an oath. All previous impeachments have had both witnesses and testimony following their House investigation. To accept that no new information could be presented is ridiculous!
Trump’s “perfect call” was not perfect. Col. Vindman testified that what we were shown was incomplete. The actual call was longer. Vindman explained that he tried to correct the record from his notes and found the call had been moved to a classified server. Now Trump has humiliated Col. Vindman, escorting him out of the White House. Fortunately the Army recognizes his patriotism and is not persuaded by Trump.
Mr. Dershowitz’ defense of Trump has been panned by most everyone in the legal community. Abuse of power by the executive is impeachable. It is why Richard Nixon resigned. Also Mr. Cipollone participated in the cover up and should have recused. Trump abuses his office when he shields witnesses or does not release subpoenaed documents. This is impeachable! Mr. Zelensky was indeed the victim of a quid pro quo. House testimony corroborated this. Witness testimony in the House told of the pressure on Zelensky. It defies credulity that Prime Minister Zelensky felt no pressure. Witnesses testified that this holding of aid was not part of foreign policy but was a bribe and a crime under U.S. law!
Now AG Barr is personally overseeing cases that involve Trump and his possible criminality to make them go away. We remember Trump paying off women to silence them before the election yet still no trial? Now Trump is using Barr to lift or reduce the sentences of friends. Thousands of former and current federal prosecutors are speaking out about Barr’s actions. All his investigations should be seen as suspicious.
November can’t come soon enough.
