Your Opinion: Response to Schnieders - Jefferson City News Tribune

Linda Wenzlick

Jefferson City

Dear Editor:

An LTE on Col. Vindman by Ms. Schnieders was recently published. She often takes positions that are different than mine and that is to be expected. To say we are polar opposites when it comes to politics is probably an understatement, but this letter I can not let slide.

She tells us that Col. Vindman is not who we think he is and there is some dark side lurking there. She alludes to an incident that happened overseas with Vindman and another service member, Jim Hickmin. Apparently Vindman was sitting with some American and Russian soldiers. He supposedly was overheard ridiculing America, President Obama, and American policy such that Mr. Hickmin had to meet him outside and “set him straight!”

It took me a little bit but I finally found what I believe are the sources used here. One was from Red State and the other from the New York Times via the Tennessee Star. In the New York Times two reporters, Mike McIntire and Nicholas Confessore, researched the story and could find nothing to substantiate Hickmin’s claim. They did do a little digging and found out that Hickmin is a big supporter of QAnon, a group that seems to be driven by conspiracy theories regarding the “Deep State.”

Also we learned that the other soldiers in the incident were Russian. In my mind this fact puts a whole new spin on things. Who is Vindman loyal to? The U.S. and Ukraine. Who is opposing Ukraine? Russia. I can see a scenario here where Vindman might have been trying to get on the good side of these Russians to get information. I have little to base this on except a hunch and circumstantial evidence.

Finally I don’t consider what he did a breach of his oath. Never are those in the armed services to follow orders that are contrary to the safety of their country. He took a lot of heat to bring forth information despite what he knew could happen but he, like many of us, believes that right matters. His courage makes me proud and apparently the Army thinks this way as well.
