Dear Editor:
The commentary by George Will seemed very reasonable in view of the recent impeachment hearings. To possibly summarize in my own words George Will’s view, I too agree that term limits would be a “refreshing” and needed change in selection of political leaders. We already have it in our executive branch of government. Continual service of one individual in a political office capacity will often lead to an attitude of indifference as in “seen it, done it, been there, nothing new.”
An acquaintance once mentioned to me why he changed majors in college from political science to a business degree. In his second year of college, he attended a political science class that began with a question. The question was, “What is the major goal of a politician after winning an election? The answer is “Winning the next election.” Wouldn’t the major goal be more beneficial to all, if the politician only strove to do the best possible? The best possible even if it meant compromising with the opposition? Running for election with the slogan, “My Way or The Highway” just doesn’t seem logical to me.
Cal Thomas and his view of elections in Ireland, Canada, United Kingdom and Germany was eye-opening. Cutting time spent in running to stay in office might allow more time in accomplishing important bills to be written and voted on. Doesn’t it seem more every day and in most every endeavor….”It’s all about the money?” The days of a small town politician with innovative and excellent ways for all to prosper and win the title of president of the United States seems at an end.
The continued coverage of the Holocaust continues to give new thoughts. “Citing the words of another survivor, Roman Kent, he described what should be the Eleventh Commandment of the Bible: “Thou shall not be indifferent.” “Because if you are indifferent, you will not even notice it when upon your own heads, and upon the heads of your descendants, another Auschwitz falls from the sky.”
