Debbie Wachspress entered this race to try to create a better country for her children, and for all of ours. Her exit is a great loss for the people of Bucks County.
On Feb. 19, I was saddened to read about the lawsuit alleging harassment against the Pennsbury School District, superintendent, and three board members including Debbie Wachspress. The Pennsbury School District recently received recognition as a 2020 District of Character and State School of Character. It has a vast selection of academic courses and esteemed music, arts and athletic programs. Its girls’ basketball team played in the district finals at Temple after barely being able to field a team three years ago. The governor chose Pennsbury to introduce his college scholarship plan to make college more affordable and retain graduates to contribute to the work force in Pennsylvania.
I would like to point out that in November, all charges were dismissed by the EEOC as being without merit, and an independent third party did not find any evidence of wrongdoing.
However, the day after the lawsuit was filed, Ms. Wachspress withdrew her candidacy for Congress after explaining she had used a derogatory name which she had been called as a child by a classmate. She didn’t want to subject her family, the Pennsbury community, and Bucks County residents to ridicule she knew would surely occur.
On Feb. 23, I was shocked and disheartened to read the Courier editorial “Our View” stating “We’d prefer our elected officials show the desire and ability to rise above – not get dragged down into – the name-calling, mud-slinging and character assassination that goes on in the swamp. Any candidate who can’t stay out of the muck while serving on a school board, won’t be able to do it in Washington, D.C. either.”
I have been a Courier Times subscriber for the entire 26 years I’ve lived in Bucks County and support local journalism so we have a source of local news. But this editorial opinion appears to be prematurely judgmental. Where is the “presumption of innocence until proven guilty” — one of the most sacred principles in the American justice system? Why wouldn’t the Courier editorial board let the truth play out before criticizing Ms. Wachspress for running for office? Let me ask each of you who contributed to this editorial opinion, how would you feel if you or your child were criticized, and perhaps falsely accused in a lawsuit before justice could prevail, especially while trying to serve your community and country?
Perhaps one thing we all can agree on, is that there is a shortage of intelligent, honest, caring candidates running to represent us today. It is not easy to garner the resources of time and money, not to mention courage — necessary to run for a national office — and have the blessing from one’s family knowing what they may be subjected to during a campaign. I have known Debbie Wachspress for many years, and she is a woman of grace, courage and integrity. She entered this race to try to create a better country for her children, and for all of ours. It is a great loss for the people of Bucks County that they didn’t get to hear her message and give her a chance.
I want to encourage young people to use their voices for positive change, to stand up and speak out when wrongs need to be righted. It will ultimately be up to our young people to make this world a better place. How shall we inspire them to run for office or serve our country?
