The coronavirus is a scary thing in all of our lives right now, but there’s a simple action we can all take to protect ourselves and the most vulnerable in our community right now. We can pledge to stay at home to reduce our risk of coming into contact with the virus and transmitting it to others. It’s what the CDC and our leaders are encouraging us to do.
I live 4,000 miles away from my family, but I pledge to stay at home for them.
I’m a healthy 23-year-old who will likely be fine if I get the coronavirus. But that’s not the case for many people in my life: both of my grandparents, who are aging and have complicated medical histories, my aunt who has survived breast cancer and now has a young baby in her home, and my mom who has diabetes and high blood pressure.
I also have people in my life who are on the front lines of this who can’t avoid exposure: my cousin is an ER doctor, several friends and my younger sister are in nursing school and are in clinicals in hospitals or volunteering at drive-through testing clinics.
I sometimes wish that I could be closer to my family to enjoy their company and support, but I know the best thing that I can do right now to support them is to stay at home and reduce my risk of exposing myself to the virus or transmitting it to others. I also hope the people physically closer to my family are doing the same.
Here’s the link you can use to take the pledge and share with your friends and family as well: studentpirgs.org/pledge.
