Our Opinion: Consider serving your community - Jefferson City News Tribune

As we collectively gear up for the biggest election cycle in four years, voters will have choices to make at all levels of government.

On Tuesday, 349 people throughout Missouri announced their intentions to do more than making those choices — they’re taking steps to be active in the government process.

Those are the people who filed for county and statewide elected offices, from county commission to Congress.

We already have contested races, which equates to choices for voters.

In all statewide offices with open seats — governor, lieutenant governor, secretary of state and attorney general — voters will have choices. In our 3rd Congressional District, voters will have choices.

In the Missouri House, some area seats saw competition on the first day of filing; others did not.

In the Cole County Courthouse, we already have contests in Cole County Commission’s Eastern and Western districts, assessor and one of two circuit judge positions. Three candidates filed for the new second associate circuit judge position. After the first day of filing, only one person filed for public administrator, treasurer and sheriff.

We have long encouraged community-minded people to consider running for elective office.

Don’t get us wrong — we’re not encouraging people to run as a way to oust any current officeholders. In fact, we commend them for their service. We’ve found that our area officeholders typically have their positions because they are in it for the right reason — using their talents to help our community.

But we also believe that elections are about choices. The democratic process works best when voters can pick from different viewpoints and visions.

If you believe you have the time and talent to serve your community in any of the open offices, consider throwing your name in the hat.
