Dear Editor:
It seems Mr. Trump’s “trial” will forever have folks encamped in one view verses another. Here is my final response on the matter. I see misconceptions on how trials work. The job of a defense team is to get a favorable result for their client. Spinning, finding excuses, stretching the truth, etc. is par for the course during trials. Trump’s team did just that, waxing on about supposed incorrect procedures which were really just their opinions, not law. The Constitution does not support their positions. It does, however, support impeachment and removal over high crimes and misdemeanors.
Withholding funds appropriated by Congress is a crime. Conspiring or attempting to conspire with a foreign nation for help in an election is a crime. Trump is guilty of those crimes. His defense did not challenge these facts but instead threw up smoke screens to give those looking for an excuse an out. Also know nothing Hunter Biden has done has any bearing on Mr. Trump breaking the law. He did that all on his own, and there is ample proof of this. The timing of the aid withdrawal and the phone conversations make these events perfectly clear. To deny it is to deny common sense. And Trump did not mention corruption once, so that idea is simply a non-starter.
Then the Senate allowed events to proceed without further testimony or evidence, thus turning the proceedings into a farce. Mr. Trump does not seem to realize he is our employee. Meetings he holds, documents he produces, conversations he has are not his. They belong to us. Yes, there is executive privilege, but over time even conversations, documents, etc. held as such will come to light unless he’s destroyed them, as rumor has it he is doing.
How will these verdicts weather over time? They essentially said the executive is above the law. Can Trump really go out on 5th Avenue and shoot someone and have it be okay? I am still just appalled the Senate voted to acquit. It is one thing for Democrats and Republicans to have separate views on policy and for the majority rule to take the day, but this is different. This is our moral compass. This was supposed to show our children that right really does matter, and we failed them, miserably!
