Dear Editor:
I wonder how helpless the next generation after millennials will be. The following article confirms my thoughts about our millennials (ages 20-35) who have been nurtured by parents and a school system who are more concerned about social problems than preparation for life. I refer to a 3/3/2020 John Anderer article: ‘Generation H(elpless)? Many Millennials Can’t Change A Light Bulb By Themselves, Survey Finds’ (https://ift.tt/2TNdS2F).
To me it clearly explains the hype over Bernie Sanders. He promises the government will provide everything, right? I haven’t yet heard that he will provide free light bulb changes but just wait, he will if that’s what it takes to get elected!
Some quotes from the article: “A recent survey of 2,000 young British adults finds that many still need assistance with the simplest of tasks — like changing a light bulb”; “Unbelievably, some respondents even admitted to simply leaving a dead light bulb in place for more than three weeks before finally mustering up the courage to ask for some help. Other simple fixes that respondents said they can’t accomplish alone included putting up wallpaper, draining a radiator, painting, tightening up a loose cabinet door, and fixing a loose screw”; “So, who do most young adults look to for help? You guessed it, dear old dad (40 percent). Meanwhile, 16 percent usually ask their mother or brother for help first”; “If one thing is clear from this survey it’s this: modern young adults just don’t feel the need to learn these skills. A full 25 percent would much rather just pay someone to perform a maintenance job than get their hands dirty themselves. As such, the average millennials spends $409.76 annually on home repairs.”
There should be no lack of understanding of this phenomenon considering our educational system has all but abandoned the teaching of individual responsibility and basic needs of survival. Instead our children’s minds have been filled with liberal doctrine which diminishes the need for self reliance and substitutes the notion that government is the solution to all problems. This was made easier by the elimination of Christian doctrine which is polar opposite to liberal teaching the intent of which is for total dependence on the state for one’s livelihood as a substitute.
God help us!
