Reader Opinion: What we can do - Brainerd Dispatch

In these unprecedented times, we may feel pretty helpless about our ability to make an impact when many of us are sequestered at home. Many of us are in a position of privilege being able to maintain social distancing, work remotely from home, and still receive our salary. There are a couple things we can do though.

For those of you who go to work, and are exposed to the public and the inherent danger of that, thank you! Your selfless service is appreciated. Please, thank every business, organization, or governmental employee you see for being our everyday heroes, and making sure we have what we need. The rest of us, stay home as much as you can, and when you do go out, wear a mask, keep your distance from others, cough into your sleeves and wash your hands frequently. And shop local when possible.

Complete your 2020Census Survey. Minnesota is 61% complete; Crow Wing County, 41%. Since federal funding is determined the next 10 years by this Census, we're giving up much of what should be ours to other parts of Minnesota, mostly to the metro area. We could lose out on Medicaid funding, student loans, school lunch program, federal highway funds, Head Start, food stamps, Section 8, and rural development grants. Every person counted is worth $2800 per year in federal funding. Wouldn't that be better if it came to us and eventually our businesses, because it's going somewhere whether you like it or not. Also, if Minnesota's population count drops, we could lose a seat in Congress and an electoral vote. You've got plenty of time, so get on it and be counted!
