Dear Editor:
Most of us have never seen anything quite like what we face today, but similar situations have happened before; for example, the Spanish Flu in 1918, and “The Big Lie” to cover it up.
The Big Lie is in full swing in the United States today, never more evident than president Trump’s statements about COVID-19. He even has Fox News Network dedicated to promoting his agenda.
It’s an old strategy. Make up something that gets people to think the way you want. Keep saying it’s over and over until most people don’t question it. They start to believe it’s true, especially if it’s something that may benefit them, even when it hurts them in the long run.
Here are direct quotes from Trump concerning coronavirus, the dates he said them and the confirmed U.S. coronavirus case count on that day.
1/31/20 — “We’ve pretty much shut it down.” Confirmed cases — eight.
2/10/20 — “A lot of people think it goes away in April.” Cases — 11
2/26/20 — “In a couple of days it goes down close to zero.” Cases — 57
2/27/20 — “It’s going to disappear, like a miracle.”
2/28/20 — “Everybody we see is getting better, and it could be everybody”. Cases — 60
3/6/20 — When asked “What do you say to concerned Americans that your statements don’t match what your health experts are saying”? Trump said, “That’s CNN, fake news.” Cases — 262
3/13/20 — Trump declares a national emergency over Covid1-9 , stating…
“No, I don’t take any responsibility at all.” Cases — 2,197
Initially medical experts at the CDC were sidelined at press briefings, as Trump and economic officials did the talking. As late as March 1, Anthony Fauci, head of the Institute of Infectious Disease, was to speak on five Sunday morning talk shows, but was told to “stand down” in favor of Trump administration officials.
As of the morning of 3/31/20 the U.S. count is over 164,000. The Big Lie was perfected in Germany throughout the 1930s to generate hate and a mistrust of free press. It’s being used today to deny climate change, the benefits of Democratic Socialism and was used on Covid-19. Except COVID-19 doesn’t care about ideology, it didn’t listen to lies about it’s lack of progression. Medical experts and science gave us a roadmap. Please follow it.
