Your Opinion: Federal micromanagement - Jefferson City News Tribune

Bert Dirschell

Dear Editor:

Why is it that so many seem convinced that the residents and legislatures of states are incompetent to deal with issues? Why must we have the god of federal government micromanage us? We need a federal government to provide national defense, conduct foreign policy, settle disputes between states, and darn little else.

Other than the ability to print money by the truckload, states have the same ability to raise funds as the federal government. If California were an independent nation it would rank fourth in the world in GDP, and 36th in the world in population. California’s GDP is nearly twice that of Canada and its population is larger than Canada’s. Texas’s GDP would rank it ninth in the world and its population would rank it 51st. Florida’s ranks would be 16th and 58th. New York’s ranks would be 10th and 60th.

Missouri’s GDP would rank us as the 37th largest of the 185 nations ranked by the World Bank. Our population would rank us 111th; larger than Denmark, Finland, Norway, New Zealand, Ireland, etc. Again I ask, why do so many think we Missourians, and those running our state and local governments, are incompetent to make decisions without federal micromanagement? I doubt that New Zealanders (GDP only 62 percent of Missouri’s and population 81 percent of ours) are sitting around quaking in fear because they have no one to tell their government how to run their affairs.

When all the hysteria clears up we will be able to sit back and review how different nations reacted to the coronavirus problem. The more we keep the federal government’s control in check, the more we can learn from how individual states react. A “one size fits all” federally mandated, and funded, solution is rarely the best solution, except maybe for politicians running for re-election. All should be able to understand that the correct response in New York City or New York state is not the correct response for Jefferson City, nor Missouri, and certainly not for Missouri’s more rural counties.

It will be interesting to look back and see why the New York metro area was so hard hit by the virus while the impact on California metro areas was much less severe.

Let's block ads! (Why?)
