Your Opinion: Judging presidents by age - Jefferson City News Tribune

Tom Ault

Jefferson City

Dear Editor:

During the last few years we have had a deluge of information regarding the age of presidents. To ask whether a person of a given age is young enough or old enough to make good, quick, and well-founded decisions is reasonable but I like what Henry Cloud and John Townsend said. “Age is a necessary but insufficient requirement for growing up. There are immature old people, and there are appropriately mature young people.”

Over the years, we have had the presidents in our country judged by their deeds while in office. This came from the POTUS poll so I decided to share it with you. The information is quite interesting, as well as enlightening. Remember however, that the hind sight of the judgers is generally better than the foresight of those being judged! Of the 10 best presidents, the average age entering office was 54.8 years and the average age of leaving office was 62.0 years. It should be noted that the average time spent in office of those gentlemen was not quite eight years. Of the 10 worst presidents, the average age entering office was 55.2 years and the average age of leaving office was 58.4 years. Some of these presidents left office before their terms were up including one, William Henry Harrison who died in office after only serving 31 days. That meant their average time in office was less than four years.

The difference between supposedly good presidents and poor ones lays in what they inherited or the threshold upon which they stood. Winston Churchill said, “Some people change their party for the sake of their principles; others their principles for the sake of their party.” Today that holds the truth for those who search for it.

Being older is many times an advantage as life’s experience has often taught us good from bad and how to distinguish one from the other.

As things change, we find the description of what is good versus what is not good changes, and consequently do does the value of each president’s decisions based on his intentions and/or his knowledge.

We must not judge our leaders by their age, but by their virtues and their ability to truly lead. We must look past what appears to be and see what actually is in front of us.
