Dear Editor:
I generally do not respond to LTEs that don’t agree with my views on Trump politics. But since my name, Mike Barnhill, was pointed out, I’ll respond this time to Tom Wieberg’s opinion. Let’s first go over Mr. Wieberg’s suggestions to an armchair quarterback for presidential duties.
1) Yes, I’m in agreement that it’s easy to second guess anyone’s decisions … especially when the decisions of the president are of second-grade quality. 2) Yes, it’s easy to see why Trump can so quickly incorporate so many of his top staff to fight a problem. How is he able to do this may just because no one will disagree with him as he has a tendency to fire disagreeable people. Just like he throws news people under the bus when a question is asked about his decision making. 3) Keeping the public so well informed is an example of his inability to show his taxes (actually telling us where does he get his money?) 4) An active president who waits until there are 1,000 confirmed virus deaths tells me one thing for sure. He was scared to death that the U.S. economy would wreck if the coronavirus was confirmed. He was more interested in keeping the economy looking good for his 2020 run to the second-term presidency than admitting we (the whole nation of Republicans and Democrats) had a crisis at hand that must be dealt with immediately. 5) Every president before Trump understood the eventual consequences of the extreme lowering of taxes. The nation wouldn’t be able to pay its obligations like Social Security, military retirement funds, Medicare, etc. The virus crisis is just the tip of the Titanic iceberg about to happen. 6) The best for last. Have you ever seen this president apologize for the condition of our country, which he helped create? No, I haven’t, but have you ever seen or heard this president ever apologize for anything he’s said or done? He must be perfect if not.
Polls suggest 44 percent of Americans listen to Fox News, MSNBC, CNN, ABC, CBS, NBC. That leaves 56 percent to rely on sources such as Facebook, Twitter (Trump’s favorite) McDonald’s or favorite bar. Major networks, although full of disagreement, seldom demonstrate “hate.” I’m one of the 44 percent who listen to slanted views, but not “hate news.” I leave that to the Facebook and Twitter faithful.
