Again we see folks on this forum supporting Donald Trump and his efforts to contain the coronavirus. To my mind there is no supporting Trump in his efforts here. His inaction and hubris have literally cost lives. Even now he seems to think that showing support to red states over blue states is somehow a win for him. From what I have seen this disease is indiscriminate. It affects folks in both red and blue states. Not only did he disband programs set up to respond to pandemics, he gave away needed supplies that now hospitals are desperately seeking.
His daily election rallies, I mean press briefings, are a travesty. There is no nationwide response. There is no consistent management of supplies such that the hardest hit areas get the help first, but rather a big game of red states vs. blue states, and governors that have to compete with FEMA for masks, gowns, test kits and ventilators. We are anything but comforted by his words. And his arrogance and lack of leadership is mimicked by governors in red states, including our own, that still seem to think this is no big deal. Apparently they can’t learn from the experience of others like California and Washington who sheltered in place almost immediately and are now seeing the curve of the virus flatten and decrease. Projections for Missouri are that we will not see our apex until mid May because we refused to shut down soon enough.
Yes, more people will lose their jobs. Yes, economic activities will take big hits, but isn’t protecting citizens worth the sacrifice? In my view this is an all-hands-on-deck situation. We do social distancing. We also help out as much as we can. We call our neighbors and friends, especially those who live alone and check in on them. We wear masks and make masks for others so health care workers can have the heavy duty ones on the job. We pass whatever bills are necessary to keep families afloat, not boatloads of money to CEOs and corporations for stock buybacks, and we monitor every cent of that money. We look hard at vote by mail for November.
And we hold accountable every government entity that refuses to work for the welfare of the citizens of our country, starting at the top!
