Our nation needs healing. On Monday, May 25, an unarmed black man once again died needlessly as a police officer knelt on George Floyd’s neck for eight minutes and 46 seconds. What happened was indecent, outrageous, frustrating, so very wrong, and disgraceful.
I understand the reactions. I do not agree with all the reactions. I do agree with God’s word, with Jesus himself, and with Dr. King, who said that violence never heals violence. It’s still okay to be angry about an unfair system and injustice, but Romans 12:21 says, “Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.” That’s what the church does best. It overcomes evil with good, and today, it’s what we need to do best.
We honor the names of those who have experienced incredible injustice in our community and throughout the United States, both out of uniform and in uniform: George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Sgt. Noel Ramirez, Deputy Taylor Lindsey, and others. Their deaths, like so many, are needless, senseless deaths.
