The CU Boulder Center for Leadership, the Bruce D. Benson Center for the Study of Western Civilization and the Aquinas Institute for Catholic Thought are hosting a free virtual panel discussion by Robert George and Cornel West at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 21, titled “Is Civil Discourse Dead?: Friendship and Faith Across the Political Divide.”

George is McCormick Professor of Jurisprudence and director of the James Madison Program in American Ideals and Institutions at Princeton University. He is also frequently a visiting professor at Harvard Law School. West is Professor of the Practice of Public Philosophy at Harvard University and holds the title of professor emeritus at Princeton University. He has also taught at Union Theological Seminary, Yale, Harvard and the University of Paris.
George is a nationally recognized member of the upper echelon of conservative intellectuals, while West, describes himself as a “radical Democrat.”
West and George have been collaborating in several different capacities over the past 13 years. Their partnership initiated when they co-taught a class at Princeton, and has evolved into touring the country. The two men speak in front of diverse audiences to model the very real possibility of having a level-headed and respectful conversation with someone who is vastly different from themselves. Despite having opposing views on many topics ranging from politics to religion and philosophy, the pair has often noted that they value the opportunities to learn from each other each and every time they speak.
