Jessica Stern, Research Professor at the Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston University, was quoted in a Vox article discussing the right-wing online discourse following the January 6 siege on the United States Capitol as well as the growing divides among that population.
The article, titled “The online far right is angry, exultant, and ready for more,” discusses the online reaction of right-wing groups on various social media platforms and forums as well as how these avenues have allowed them to continue perpetuating falsehoods. There is a clear divide among the “online right” as groups split on whether to support or denounce President Donald Trump following the violent events at the Capitol.
According to Stern, online forums such as TheDonald as well as social media sites like Twitter, Facebook, Reddit, and Parler act “like a hall of mirrors” in which people can strategize, boast, make in-jokes, and taunt law enforcement. While right-wing extremists used to be more discrete about their ideology, Stern points out that social media and the internet has given them a path to the mainstream and now elected political leaders are even echoing their ideology.
