New shows and fresh voices aim to give listeners a destination for in-depth interviews, thought-provoking viewpoints and enlightening debate.
Times Insider explains who we are and what we do, and delivers behind-the-scenes insights into how our journalism comes together.
At The New York Times, the Opinion department is an independent entity that operates separately from the newsroom. Using its own staff of editors and roster of writers, the department publishes about a dozen written viewpoints a day, along with original video and interactive articles. But since last fall, it has also started offering people more opportunities to listen.
That’s where my job comes in, as the managing producer of the Opinion Audio team. We now have three podcasts in production and release a new episode every weekday. Did you know that? It’s a big jump from a year ago, when “The Argument” was the lone show in our stable. We’ve grown a lot in a short period of time.
We’re building on that foundation with the DNA of Opinion and the intimacy of audio. We want Opinion Audio to be a place where ideas can be interrogated and wrestled with, even when — especially when — our listeners might not agree with those ideas. We’re having long conversations with people whose ideas are affecting policy and society. We’re asking people in power why they’re abusing it. And we’re having civil debates about how this country should and shouldn’t be governed.
The Opinion department has long opened its doors to outside voices, and Opinion Audio is no different. We want our listeners to hear the world differently. We’re cooking up new programming to debut later this year that will bring you the voices of ordinary people living through extraordinary times.
For now, I encourage you to open up your podcast app or find us online, and listen.
“The Argument”
The flagship for Opinion Audio that debuted in 2018, this podcast will embark on its next chapter on Wednesday, when Jane Coaston will become the new host. She’ll bring her years of reporting on politics (and sports) to the show, where conservative and liberal voices debate on abortion, climate, Senator Josh Hawley and more. It’s where actual uncomfortable arguments are allowed to happen, even about our own place of work, and where three conservatives can argue about Donald J. Trump and agree to disagree. We’ll be adding a wide range of voices to weigh in on disagreements that have become more complicated and harder to address than ever. And we’ll model what debates in the public discourse should sound like.
“Sway”
This is a podcast about power — those who have it and those who don’t — hosted by Kara Swisher, a veteran tech reporter and contributing Opinion writer. Some of the most engaging episodes have focused on disinformation and holding officials accountable, including conversations with the ex-Parler chief executive John Matze; Dominion Voting Systems’ chief executive, John Poulos; and the Georgia secretary of state, Brad Raffensperger. The show has also featured Lina Khan, now a potential Biden pick for commissioner of the Federal Trade Commission, and Anna Wintour, as she took fire for Vogue’s February Kamala Harris cover.
“The Ezra Klein Show”
This podcast, which debuted in January and is hosted by the political journalist Ezra Klein, delivers in-depth interviews with experts on subjects ranging from politics and markets to consciousness and psychedelics. In a recent episode, Ezra and Paul Krugman explored the ways in which what’s happening to our economy is more akin to a natural disaster than a recession. Vivek Murthy, President Biden’s nominee for surgeon general, offered his thoughts on how to tackle Covid-19. And the sociologist Zeynep Tufekci gave a persuasive lesson on the value of “systems thinking.”
Stay tuned for more from the Opinion Audio team later this year. And if anything you hear makes you rethink something or change your mind, let us know. It’s what we’re here for.
