Guest Opinion: Karen Libin: Staying with Harley - The Daily Camera

By Karen Libin

Why are vet clinics still closed to pet guardians?

My husband, John, and I recently went through a pet guardian’s nightmare of having an emergency situation during the weekend. Our six-year-old golden retriever, Harley, collapsed without warning due to an acute heart failure.

First we had the horrible experience of going to an understaffed emergency clinic in Longmont that couldn’t accommodate us. Then we dashed to a Boulder clinic that wouldn’t admit us without a computer-entered admission form. The staff there claimed it was their Covid protocol that clients are no longer allowed to sign an actual piece of paper. I wonder how many folks with animals in emergency health situations think, “Gosh, I better see if I need to fill out any online forms” before racing their pet to an emergency clinic. My guess is zero.

But finally our suffering and scared and dog was allowed to be seen by a vet at this clinic but without us (again due to supposed Covid regulations), being terribly manhandled in the process.  The vet there recognized the acuteness of the situation and hurriedly steered us to the Colorado State University Veterinary Teaching Hospital.

After the long ride to Fort Collins, our poor, very sick dog was again dragged against his will down a long hall and away from us, again due to Covid regulations. Eventually we were allowed  to meet with two vets and visit our dog. But I believe the only reason was because they took pity on us: Harley has an aggressive terminal condition.

I would not want any pet guardian to go through what we have been going though. I ask you, why at this point in the pandemic are vet clinics’ Covid regulations not loosening like all other businesses? Why can we now go to hairdressers, restaurants, grocery stores, dentists, but we are not allowed to be in a vet clinic with our sick, stressed pet? Should people be required to drop off their acutely ill children or their elderly parents in the parking lot for their medical appointments?

We as realtors have managed to continue working and showing people houses by wearing masks, gloves and social distancing and no one I know has contracted the virus from such encounters. All businesses have adapted to the changing COVID conditions but not vet clinics. They continue to follow suggestions offered by the State of Colorado at the start of the pandemic. And let me be clear: these were “suggestions” not “mandates.” Vet clinics set their own COVID protocol regulations.

Veterinarians, by the nature of their trade, already own masks and gloves and should be able to cope with the current state of Covid. Additionally, as health care providers most all of them are vaccinated by now, and we are not worried about pets transmitting the disease. So why are both pets and their guardians made to suffer during emergency situations? It’s time for this to change. It’s time for more compassion and some common sense.
