Guest Opinion: Jason Cui: Join me in a distinctive mission - Boulder Daily Camera

By Jason Cui

I first came across the Now You Are the Group’s Interest (NYAGI) Project, a Boulder-based non-profit, October, 2020. NYAGI caught my eye because of its distinctive mission: Educate, Empower and Elevate. Unlike much of the world’s efforts in alleviating healthcare crises, NYAGI focuses on sharing knowledge and empowering medical providers in marginalized communities. NYAGI is unique in harnessing the power of technology, like iPads and iPhones, as tools to teach ultrasound and medical diagnostic skills that can help save lives in low-income countries. We in high-income countries upgrade our phones because our old phones become “outdated.” However, in the context of NYAGI, these “outdated” technologies can be powerful, lifesaving tools. With our iPad/iPhone Saving Lives Program, we have a chance to create a meaningful solution by coming together.

I believe in the importance of incorporating the community into this project. I created a system of tracking donated devices to help the donors realize where their devices are going and to create a global community aspect to NYAGI. However, more importantly, I understood the crucial roles youth play in various social causes. In January, I began to invite high school students from the Boulder area to help implement awareness and donation campaigns in their schools as part of a collective, youth-based effort to bring light to NYAGI’s work. I lead these passionate students from Fairview High School, Monarch High School, Stargate High School, Niwot High School, and Alexander Dawson School in raising awareness about the simple ways anyone can help NYAGI. We have created social media posts, written emails to school administrators, partnered with school clubs, and collected iPad/iPhone donations, raising Boulder’s awareness of NYAGI’s unique cause.

High school students may not have much money. High school students may not have iPads and iPhones. But, we do have a voice – a unique voice that is hard to ignore when aligned. Today’s youth may have a reputation for being selfish and obsessed with social media. Yet, we are on the forefront of action and we have the ability to use technology to amplify our collective voice. Once we light the fire for a cause, movements can spread like wildfire amongst ourselves. Our community cannot ignore our calls for action.

In the 1960’s, students took a stand against the war in Vietnam and made a difference. Today, youth around the world are staging protests and petitioning governments, demanding change. After all, this is our world, our future, our community. What we decide as our priorities is how our future will be shaped. Therefore, I hope you will join in on this effort. We will never meet the mother in a remote Nepalese village whom we are helping; but, through our collective effort, she will live to see her child grow up.
