SAN LUIS VALLEY — “After the last election, we saw so much discord in our country. We need to have a dialogue on how to have civil discourse.”
That statement, made by Jan Oen with the League of Women Voters in the San Luis Valley, describes in a nutshell the reason the League of Women Voters (LWV) are hosting a short but powerful presentation by the Center for Restorative Programs on something many would agree is simply not happening very much these days. Connecting with others and healing relationships.
Originally formed by a group of local leaders, the Center for Restorative Programs has been in existence for close to 30 years, serving all six counties in the San Luis Valley. Although the group has been primarily working in the schools and facilitating more than 2,500 restorative interventions with youth, the language in their mission gives insight into why the LWV decided the group was well-suited to address the concerns they have about the lack of civil discourse – that is, engaging in conversation intended to enhance understanding – that has become so prominent.
Specifically, CRP’s mission is to “strengthen community in the San Luis Valley by building connection, transforming conflict and healing relationships” as they dedicate themselves to “empowering and uplifting our community, and finding productive ways forward.”
Oen emphasizes that LVW is non-partisan, and for that reason, wants to be open in extending an invitation to the public to sit in (virtually) on the presentation, regardless of anyone’s political persuasion. The presentation will be short, only twenty minutes long, with time for questions and answers to follow.
