Opinion: Supreme Court risks its legitimacy with abortion ban ruling - The San Diego Union-Tribune

Re “Even abortion foes should grasp the radicalness of Supreme Court decision on Texas law” (Sept. 2): Since Mitch McConnell gerrymandered the Supreme Court at the tail end of Barack Obama’s and Donald Trump’s presidencies, the Supreme Court has lost its legitimacy.

We now have justices who allow their religious beliefs to color their jurisprudence which is leading to making abortion illegal in this country. This is not separation of church and state, this is an archaic and irrational belief system that has no place in making laws for society. We might as well be living under the Taliban.

The Supreme Court has effectively ruled that Texas women must be seen, but not heard. No choice in abortion rights. What is extremely puzzling is that people decried the “loss of freedom” when mask mandates were suggested. But loss of freedom over one’s body is too trivial to matter.

Your column Friday on the radical turn taken by the SCOTUS on the Texas abortion ban was on target and worth several readings. The court’s inaction rewrites the concept of “legal standing” that we thought was enshrined in Article III of the Constitution. Please follow up with opinions of legal scholars that we layman can understand.

Meantime, it’s hard to believe any law school or bar association in the country condones the notion that people without legal standing can use the courts to advance a political agenda, get rewarded if they win, but face no liability if they lose. Under this ruling, Uber drivers are now criminal accomplices for taking a woman to a clinic, and frivolous lawsuits are now the law of the land. Can Supreme Court justices be disbarred for this inane ruling.

The state of Texas, with less than half of its population fully vaccinated against COVID-19, passed one of the most restrictive anti-abortion laws in the country and the Supreme Court upheld it.

Those who choose not to get vaccinated against COVID-19 take the position, “My body, My choice.” Apparently “My body, My choice” only applies to men and not to women, at least in the state of Texas. Florida and Arkansas are two other states considering a similar anti-abortion law and again these are states with low COVID-19 vaccination rates.

Women of the United States take heed. Remember when women could not vote, could not own property and any wealth they owned when they married become their husband’s property? Don’t for a moment think this or similar kinds of restrictions couldn’t happen again in the United States if we don’t stay vigilant and protect women’s rights.
