The Sentinel has sunk to a new low in characterizing the opinion piece on SB35 ( a law requiring local governments to approve housing projects that meet certain criteria), as “local news” or “local history.” As journalists, the paper has an obligation to accurately label opinions as such. Even if I agreed with the opinions expressed in the piece, I would not want to see it labeled as “news.” As it was, the article contained certain inaccuracies and omissions, including the actual history of local government erecting barriers to the construction of housing for low-income people for decades.
When the newspaper no longer distinguishes real news from opinion, it no longer meets even minimal journalistic standards.
— Gretchen Regenhardt, Watsonville
The Sentinel welcomes your letters to the editor. Letters should be short, no more than 150 words. We do not accept anonymous letters. Letter-writers should include their full name as well as a street address and telephone number. We don’t publish those details in the newspaper, but need the information for verification purposes. Occasionally, we reject letters simply because we’ve had so many on the same subject. Submit your letters online at https://ift.tt/323VLsP.
