Future plans for Washington Park are worth considering, particularly a plan to put nine parking spaces in the cul-de-sac at the end of the park drive.
The area near those parking spaces would be paved with concrete sidewalks, a waterless restroom built and a 1.2 mile crushed limestone walking loop created. A third phase would install three additional trails — two open to mountain biking and a third to include autism-friendly play stations on the phase two trail loop.
Unlike some projects that are hard to grasp, the city’s creation of a plan for the park will make it easier to find grant funding when the time arrives.
One of those biking trails would connect to a city-owned parcel on West Fifth Avenue accessible only by bike or by walking. And that trail was criticized by commission member Kirk Johnson and by a city resident whose house is on West Fifth Avenue. The city resident asked about safety, noting the presence of several sexual offenders in the area where trail access would be as well as recent criminal issues in the neighborhood.
Rich Hatfield, Allegheny National Forest district ranger, said adding hikers and bikers to the area may decrease some of the problems the area has been having simply by adding eyeballs to the area. We agree that having more people using the trail, particularly if those people take ownership of an asset they enjoy, will probably help.
In our opinion, this is a good project for Washington Park.
