“ ‘This is what I think and I am entitled to my opinion!.’ ” Yes, and you have constitutional guarantees to do so without prosecution. We value the right to believe what we think is right and to express our opinions accordingly.
What is not true is that an opinion is a fact. The truth is that a fact is a statement that can be supported to be true or false by data or evidence. In contrast, an opinion is a personal expression of a person’s feelings or thoughts that may or may not be based in data. Many opinions are based on emotions, beliefs, and values all of which can be completely unsupported by evidence. Whether your opinion is valuable depends on how you reach that conclusion.” Cortney Warren, “Psychology Today,” June 2017.
Straight forward and unambiguous. How many opinions submitted to this column have met that standard? Too many are opinions stated as fact with little or no evidence. A recent letter about vaccinating the military is an example. “When all or most of the active military personnel are no longer standing guard, who or what will be protecting those who need protecting.” The facts: as of 12/16/21 97% of the active military had been vaccinated. Navy 99.4%, Air Force 97%, Marines 96%, Army 98%. The Army is discharging from service 3,300 which is 0.68% of it’s 486,000 active force; not all or even most.
