Kvaran: We need more facts, less emotion in civil discourse - Daily Independent

Letter by Einar Kvaran of Sun City

Larry Sims’ recent letter, (“Only God can judge His people,” Sun City Independent, March 2, 2022), raises many interesting points. I am going to respond to a few of them.

First of all he states, twice, that he has lived, “...at the time of 14 presidents...” of the U.S. Since he was born around the time of Pearl Harbor, my count comes up with 15 presidents (please do your own count).

This suggests to me that either Mr. Sims is not very careful in his approach to his own subject, which again, to me, then makes all his conclusions suspect; or he is one of those who does not acknowledge Biden as a president, which takes us somewhere else, a place we are not going now.

He goes on to state, “The last generation has been a time when God was removed from public school, abortion was legalized and sexual identity was reduced to feelings not facts.” The last part of that statement is harder to deal with, but the first two points are not.

Since god was removed from public schools following Abington Township v. Schempp in 1963 and abortion made legal after Roe v Wade in 1973, it is perhaps tempting (that is to say, emotionally satisfying) to blame these events on the generation of the ’60s and ’70s; but to call that “the last generation” seems odd.

The last generation from now was born between 1995 and 2000, well after those events. In fact, as opposed to in feelings, the Supreme Court decision in Abington Township v. Schempp was made by justices born between 1886 and 1917, while the court that decided Roe v. Wade was born between 1898 and 1924, nary a flower child among them.

It seems to me that Mr. Sims is indulging in an emotional flight of fantasy rather than going where the facts lead.

Adblock test (Why?)
