Opinion | Public funding shouldn't be used to boost sports owners' egos - The Washington Post

If a major league franchise in any sport and a new completely paid-for Circus Maximus stadium were offered, I believe the people of Williamsburg and Jamestown would refuse the offer. We live here because of our interest in history, government and the beauty of our natural environment. These activities are paid for by donations, volunteerism help and astute management without government funding.

Taxpayer money should be used in furthering education and environmental goals, rather than supporting those who enjoy watching a ball being thrown or kicked, and in supporting the egos of wealthy owners. Those of us who receive no pleasure from sports should not be obligated to support the pleasures of those who do. Oppose government funding for a new stadium.
