Letter: Don’t conflate procedures in abortion discourse - CTPost

israelob.blogspot.com

I find it necessary to write and correct a confusing point in the article. The author refers to a woman whose mother had an ectopic pregnancy removed and states without access to “legal abortion” the mother would have died with that first pregnancy and the young lady (the second pregnancy) would not have been born.

I think it is important for all to understand that the removal of an ectopic pregnancy is an emergency procedure that is always and everywhere legal. The ectopic pregnancy (usually presents with acute abdominal pain with or without bleeding) is removed because it is growing in the wrong place and cannot survive. The purpose of the removal of an ectopic pregnancy is not the termination of a pregnancy (although that is the indirect outcome) but the resolution of an emerging life threatening situation. An abortion is the elective removal of an intrauterine pregnancy with the direct purpose of terminating the pregnancy.

The two procedures result in the ending of a pregnancy but are different in clinical presentation and purpose and should not be conflated.
