Larry Simoneaux provided such a refreshing dose of common sense in his guest commentary (“Gun owners, we need need to demand changes to firearm laws,” The Herald June 21).”
As Larry’s editor for much of his previous stint as a Herald opinion columnist, I always valued the constructive approach he brought to thorny issues. He reached out with good will from his center-right perch to seek areas of agreement with those who had different views. He interacted with readers who disagreed with him, often inviting them to sit down over coffee to explore issues more deeply by listening and learning.
Larry understood that the road to solutions requires that much. He also made many new friends in the process. Even when they agreed to disagree, they did so with a smile and a handshake.
We could all benefit from doing more listening outside of our own echo chambers, and recognizing those with whom we disagree not as enemies, but as fellow community members who have more in common with us than we might realize.
