Good evening and happy 2022 election night. Times Opinion is doing something new: a live, rolling conversation among our columnists and political opinion writers about the big ideas and future of the country that we see playing out in the races for Senate, House, governor and other offices. To paraphrase my colleague Gail Collins: It could be a long night, people.
How I’m thinking about tonight: I was politics editor at The Times for the 2018 midterms and 2020 presidential election, and I’m often looking for bellwether races and what they say about our politics. There’s a good chance we’ll have a winner tonight in the New Hampshire Senate race; if the Republican Don Bolduc pulls off an upset victory over the Democratic incumbent, Maggie Hassan, it’ll portend a big night for the G.O.P. nationwide and say a lot about voters prioritizing economic issues and divided government over abortion and threats to democracy.
I’m also looking for signs that Americans are choosing right-wing conservatives over moderate Democrats — the choice in some House races in Virginia and Florida. And are there places we can see abortion rights really mattering to the vote, like in close Michigan and New York races? Are suburban voters who fueled the Democratic wave election in 2018 shifting to the right, and if so, why? We will be watching for this in Georgia, Texas and other states.
Finally (for now): Is the night good for Donald Trump? He is signaling he’ll announce his candidacy for president next Tuesday, Nov. 15. Are there any silver linings tonight for President Biden and the Democrats? We will talk about it all, and we will be taking some questions from readers throughout the night. Thank you for joining us. Now over to my colleagues …
