My point has always just been that if you really look at the evidence in the Harvard case and if you look at the way in which they were tabulating, say, the personal scores, which were the center of that case — in which the admissions office would assign every applicant a score and Asian students always scored way below everybody else, right?

And if you look at all of that and you say that Harvard does not have any type of discriminatory attitude toward Asian students by any standard with which you would, as a progressive, say, “Well, that number is lower than that number, and therefore there must be discrimination.”

If you have that type of mindset and you look at what Harvard was doing and conclude there is no discrimination — I just think that that makes no sense. I think that by that standard, you have to conclude that Harvard was discriminating against Asian students.

I think that almost every person that I’ve spoken to who is Asian American, the majority of them are for affirmative action. In their quieter moments or even just out loud, they’ll just admit, “Yeah, of course Harvard is discriminating against Asian students.” This is something that, I think, if you grew up Asian American and you have the opportunity to apply to places like Harvard, this is just something that you know.

And so I think that there’s a little bit of gaslighting going on, and that’s mostly what I’ve been discussing. Which is that, look, it is valuable to defend affirmative action. But again, I just think that the tragedy of all of this is that this is, like, the worst possible way and place in which we could defend affirmative action. Because there is discrimination against Asian students. That seems clear as day to me.
