Dear Editor:
A recent opinion you wrote was titled “Ignore the Protesters.” I attended that Rally for Freedom because I wanted to add my voice to those who were there to stand up for our constitutional rights and to let the governor know that all lives matter. The inconsistencies in government mandates of picking winners and losers is obvious to all.
I reject the premise stated that health experts are in agreement on the actions to address this virus. Currently very little of the information given out by task force health experts has come to pass nor have their policies been scientifically proven. The models were grossly exaggerated. Decisions were made with little data. Several states and one country, Sweden, did not follow these lockdown policies and have fared no worse than those that used drastic measures of taking peoples’ livelihoods. There are health care experts who have offered other opinions on herd immunity. What about mental health experts who tell us of the ramifications of stay-at-home isolation? What we can all see now is that coronavirus is everywhere, highly contagious, and not nearly as deadly to the majority of people as first believed. There are vulnerable populations that will need to exercise more caution. However, what about all the other health issues that are being ignored because people are scared to seek or being denied health care during this pandemic?
It is ironic that in the middle of a pandemic, the health care system is on life support, closing clinics and laying off employees. Attending the rally was not a petulant act of rebellion or a rejection of the seriousness of this virus as characterized by the editor.
I want what is best for all people but giving up our freedoms to politicians and health departments in times of crisis will not achieve this goal.
The editor wrote the protesters were irresponsible and endangering children. He recently wrote another editorial pointing out April is STD Awareness Month and that those most affected are residents 15-24 years of age that tend to have multiple partners. He noted the health department was making available protection for residents and encouraged them to take advantage of these offerings. During a pandemic, when we are being told to social distance, could this encouragement not be considered irresponsible and endangering people, some of them children? Maybe we should ignore the editor.
