Our discourse has to start with inclusion | HeraldNet.com - The Daily Herald

Threatening violence will not gain support in our democratic republic. Yes, it is hard to master the art of debate. But our society depends on mastering our emotions and minds so we can reach into each other’s minds and create agreement. That is how we create a better reality.

Threatening someone to force agreement won’t work, and can never be allowed to work. White supremacy, or the idea that whites could secede into a segregated society, however, is not a debate at all. First of all, what we perceive about race or ethnic differences is only about a brief moment in time. A few hundred years or a few thousand years in the future, society will look different.

No one will influence that no matter how much they want to. The best thing public leaders could do today is to not pander to misinformed groups or pretend that prejudice works, but support inclusion for everyone equally in a multicultural reality. White supremacy that comes with threats of violence should specifically never be tolerated. To promote ethnic pride or heritage is great. We can all celebrate the better world we create together as part of the many splendored human family.
